Dear Compassionate Friends,
Welcome to the first issue of the Two Compassionate Hands Newsletter. This Newsletter, like the website, is dedicated to healing the planet one person at a time. This and future issues will contain articles on physical, environmental, spiritual health, and more. We look forward to bringing you relevant information that will aid you on your path to optimal health. Please let us know what would be most helpful to you and your family.
At a time like this, with so many displaced from their homes as a result of Katrina, we must all use our own two compassionate hands to help where we can. Perhaps your community has welcomed some of the evacuees - what can you do to ease their load? If you haven't yet made a financial donation, please consider the American Red Cross and make that donation today.
In your health and the health of the planet,
Jann Griffiths

GRATITUDE: The ICE That Fills Your Half Empty Glass!
By Lance Beggs
Are you completely happy in your life right now? Honestly?
Have you achieved all the success that you know is
rightfully yours?
If not, then perhaps you're missing this VITAL piece of the
puzzle- GRATITUDE.
A deep and profound feeling of gratitude must be an
ESSENTIAL component of who you are, if you wish to live a
life of permanent happiness and success.
I totally agree with Cicero when he said, "Gratitude is not
only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others."
The fact is, without complete unconditional gratitude, there
is no true happiness. And without an underlying foundation
of happiness, you cannot have success.
On the other hand, a person living in complete gratitude
cannot fail to be happy and successful.
For the short answer as to why this works, consider one of
the Universal Laws governing our lives which says that what
you focus your mind on, is what you get. Focus on negativity
and you will experience more negativity. Focus on the
positive, and you will experience more of the positive.
The power of gratitude is that it focuses your attention on
the positive aspects of your life. There is no room for fear
in any of its forms, when your mind is filled with a deep
and profound sense of gratitude. By focusing on the good and
positive aspects of your life, and expressing gratitude, you
will get even more of these positive experiences.
And even more powerful than that - look to your current and
past challenges and failures - and find a positive there.
Give thanks for it. And you will find that you've taken a
massive step in growing & learning from the experience, and
overcoming similar challenges in future.
Can't find a positive in your failures? You're just not
trying hard enough. Consider this quote by Confucius:
"I was complaining that I had no shoes till I met a man who
had no feet."
There is always a positive. Find it, and express a deep and
unconditional gratitude. Your future success and happiness
depend on it.
Try not to limit yourself in who you express gratitude to.
It doesn't have to always be a person. You can also express
gratitude to an object (just for being), an experience, a
feeling, a sound, a colour, a view. You can thank a group of
people, a whole nation, the whole of humanity, nature, the
universe, God, the Universal Spirit, or collective
consciousness, or whichever other power you can relate to.
So what's the most effective way to express gratitude?
Let's look at 2 simple methods.
(1) Repeat after me: "Thank You!"
Awesome! I think you've got it. :)
You can make the expression as detailed and specific as you
wish, but there is something beautiful about a simple "Thank
You" when expressed with a deep and genuine love &
appreciation.
Try it now. Think of the person you most love in the world.
Perhaps your partner, your parents, or a friend? If you
can't think of anyone, then picture the type of person you'd
love to fall in love with. Focus on their image with
complete acceptance and love, and thank them!
"Thank you for just being you."
"Thank you for the joy you bring to my life."
Whatever you wish to thank them for, express it with genuine
love & gratitude.
There's NO WAY you can feel bad while expressing true
gratitude.
Try it again. If you're reading this article, then express
gratitude for the power of sight. If it's being read to you,
then give thanks for the miracle of sound.
It takes a bit of practice, but if you do this regularly,
your quality of life will improve dramatically.
And whenever you find your life is not quite on track, pause
to show gratitude for what you have here & now. You'll find
the right way forward.
(2) Now let's take it to another level. You may have heard
of the concept of a Gratitude Journal. This is powerful
stuff.
If you're serious about your happiness, you MUST do this.
Buy a nice book, and as often as you can, record something
you're thankful for. Anything! It doesn't matter how big or
small. Just record whatever you're grateful for in you life.
Expressing your gratitude in writing, and reading it back to
yourself, increases the power a thousandfold.
Personally, I try to add five new entries per day.
And anytime you feel like a nice "pick-me-up", reach for
your Gratitude Journal.
You'll find it's full of inspiration - an uplifting reminder
of the good that you have in your life. It'll get your mind
back on the positive, and perhaps even sometimes you'll
experience that deep "knowing", that you really are perfect
exactly as you are, and that your life is perfect exactly as
it is.
Try it. Start today & see how your life improves.
If you want to see an example of how simple it is to express
gratitude via a Gratitude Journal, please have a look at
mine.
I have recently moved it online so that you can all see.
You will find it at:
http://www.HowToBeHappyNow.com/journal/index.html
Oh, and before I go, why not try this exercise for an hour
or so, and see how it makes you feel. Sit down somewhere
where you can watch people go past. Perhaps a cafe in the
city, or a seat on a train. For every person you see, give a
smile and send a silent "Thank You" to them. For no real
reason. Just because you can. Make it a silent outpouring of
love and gratitude - just for being.
It's silent, so there's no need to feel silly. Just try it.
You'll feel good, I promise.
THANK YOU for reading,
Lance Beggs.

Exercise Can Help Relieve Stress
by
Shaan Randow
Exercise may not be the most exciting word in your vocabulary,
but it sure has a lot of benefits. Participating in daily
exercise not only makes us healthier in general, it can
diminish the effects of stress on our bodies as well.
How many times have you heard someone proclaim, “The doctor
says it’s stress.” ? We occasionally laugh it off, concluding
that’s just what doctors say when they don’t know the real
answer or diagnosis. But the truth of the matter is that too
much stress plays a role in many diseases.
To increase your immune system and decrease your stress levels,
try some daily exercise. Movement is the key word here. Bend,
stretch, reach, walk. And there’s no need necessarily to buy
expensive equipment. You can implement more movement into your
daily routine and reap the benefits.
If you’re keen on aerobic exercise, grab a partner and have a
blast with one of the basic aerobic videos. Or simply go out
for a walk and enjoy spending time together. You’ve heard it
dozens of times –walking really is the best overall excise for
your health. As long as you have a decent pair of walking
shoes, you’re in business!
Also, as you’re going throughout your daily activities, make it
a point to walk a little further, bend down and pick something
up instead of using some sort of pick up stick or knocking the
item toward you with your foot. While you’re sitting, do some
simple stretches for your neck and shoulders.
If you enjoy watching television, buy a jogging board. These
padded boards make running, jumping or walking in place less
stressful on your knees and joints. They’re easy to store and
portable. In my opinion, jogging boards are the best piece of
exercise equipment you can buy. And they’re far cheaper than
bulky treadmills and stationary bikes, too!
By making it a point to move more throughout the day, you boost
your body’s immunity and stay healthier in general. There’s no
reason to allow stressful situations to take a toll on your
health.

Why and How Detoxification Helps For Overall Health
by Sandra Kim Leong
Toxin levels are increasing at alarming rates day-to-day. Just
consider the rising number of health issues (such as, cancer,
cardiovascular diseases, obesity, headaches, fatigue,
persistent coughs, constipation, allergies, etc.) in today’s
world.
Toxins exist both externally (outside our body) and internally
(inside our body). Through food, toxins exist when there are
chemicals, pesticides, food addictives or drugs. Through the
environment, air and water pollution are the chief areas of
toxins. We get these external toxins when we eat, breathe or
touch.
Internally, our bodies produce toxins as a normal everyday
function. For instance, perspiring and clearing our bowels are
important eliminative functions. A body breaks down when it
cannot handle the normal eliminative processes well due to an
overload of toxins. This is also when the body also becomes
susceptible to bacteria, yeasts and parasites entering it. The
result is infections and diseases and the inability of the body
to cope.
To help achieve better health, it is important therefore to
detoxify and cleanse. How much you wish to detoxify is really
dependent on yourself and how “cleanse” you want your body to
be. In fact, any simple changes to your diet that prevent and
clear your toxin built-up is helpful. For instance, drinking
eight glasses of filtered water is something easy that you can
do on a daily basis. Other changes to your diet like eating
more green leafy vegetables and high fibre foods can also be
made.
A more drastic measure of cleansing your body is to do complete
fasting. Complete fasting helps to give your body organs a much
needed rest. In fact, Hippocrates (the “Father of Modern
Medicine”) believed that the body needs not only physical rest
but chemical rest. Chemical rest refers to withholding food,
thus giving the organs of the body an opportunity to discharge
accumulated waste products and thereby cleanse themselves.
However, before you embark on any serious detox or cleansing
regime, you are well advised to seek professional advice.
Over-detoxification can also occur in some cases, when some
people go to extremes and essential nutrients from the body are
lost.

The A-Z of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) -
Acupuncture
by Linda Stewart BSc
What is it?
Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into specific points
situated all over the body. It's aim is to balance the body's
energy, prevent and treat dis-ease.
Acupuncture, a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has
been practiced in China for over 2000 years. Western acupunture,
(aka medical acupuncture) is more recent and is now taught and
practiced widely in the west following its growth in popularity
in the seventies.
Traditional acupuncturists believe that in good health, our vital
energy or Chi flows naturally around the body through channels
known as meridians.
Meridians are said to be connected to the organs and systems of
the body. Getting ill is a sign that our chi (also known as life
force) is disturbed or out of balance.
Chi is made up of equal and opposite qualities known as yin and
yang. It can be disturbed by any number or combination of causes
including stress, anger, fear, grief, poor nutrition, weather
conditions, infections and so on.
Acupuncturist Carol Newman, trained at the school of five element
acupuncture says,
"In Five Element Acupuncture, each one of us has
a particular relationship with one of the elements of Wood, Fire,
Earth, Metal or Water. The element gives our life certain
emphasis, making some serious or lighthearted, others more
determined or anxious.
It is these elements, associated with organs of the body and
meridians of energy, which take the stress we are suffering,
revealing its unease through physical and emotional signs of
imbalance".
What happens during an acupuncture treatment?
As with all complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM)
consultations, the acupuncturist will begin by taking a case
history and asking questions to assess your current state of
health.
The examination may include tongue diagnosis and pulse reading.
The assement determines the acupuncture points to be needled and
the treatment is unique to the client.
Acupuncture needles are sterile and usually disposable.
Most people do not feel any discomfort when the needles are
inserted and many find acupuncture to be a relaxing, sedating
experience. The needles are usually left in place for between
15-30 minutes.
A popular alternative to acupuncture is acupressure which is
simply acupuncture without the needles. During acuppressure, the
points are stimulated with finger pressure.
You may also come across auricular (ear) acupuncture which is
beneficial for addictions.
Moxibustion and cupping are sometimes used by acupuncturists.
Moxibustion is applying heat from the burning of an aromatic herb
moxa (Artemesia Vulgaris).
Cupping is another method of stimulating the acupuncture points
by using suction cups to create a vacuum.
Sometimes a small electrical current may be used to stimulate the
needles.
What's acupuncture good for?
Acupuncture triggers pain relieving endorphins in the
brain promoting feelings of wellbeing. It can be used to maintain
health as well as treat dis-ease.
Acupuncture has been shown as being beneficial in treating a wide
variety of conditions including headaches, asthma, high blood
pressure, menstrual problems and digestive disorders.
It is often used in pain relief, drug or alcohol rehabilitation,
stopping smoking and losing weight.
Final note
Make sure your acupuncturist is properly trained and qualified.
You can find an acupuncturist through the acupuncture associations.

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. - Albert Einstein |
