Dear Compassionate Friends,

Even though it is snowing today I know in my heart that spring is right around the corner. The xeriscape garden that we planted last year and tended through the hot months with water and care will be putting up new shoots in the very near future. The tulips and daffodils will be blooming too - adding color to the yard before the end of the month. It was a mild winter in relation to last year, but I am more than ready for the longer and warmer days to come.

This edition is dedicated to the renewed possibilities of spring. I am gearing up for spring with the plans of spring cleaning my home as well as my body. Did you know you could spring clean your dog and your marriage? Read on...and have a great spring.

I am in spring training for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. I have made a pledge of raising $1,800 - please support my pledge and make a donation on line or send a check to me made out to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. My 39+ mile walk is June 28th and 29th. You can get a Buddy Bear of your own for a donation of $25 or more - she is an adorable pink 12-inches tall with adjustable arms and legs, and a pink ribbon in her heart.

Does Your Marriage Need A Spring Cleaning?

 By Mark Webb

Does your marriage revolve around your children or grandchildren? Do you and your spouse spend too much time apart? Have you grown apart? Imagine your marriage 20 years from now. How is it going to be if you keep up with your current approach? If you don't like the thought of your future with its present course, then your marriage may need a spring cleaning.

Ernest Holmes said, "Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it." Have your thoughts undermined a once great relationship? If so, you can redirect your thoughts and thus redirect the future of your marriage. Most couples put more effort into the planning of their vacation than they do their marriage.

Remember the days of dating each other? You couldn't get enough of each other and gladly gave a lot of attention to your partner. After a couple gets married they are pulled apart by things like their career and the needs of their children. A routine develops and if the couple isn't careful, so does a sense of boredom.

Unfortunately, your spouse tends to get blamed for the boredom. But don't be too quick to judge. Simply because you have been together for a number of years doesn't mean that you know your spouse today. People change. As men get older, they tend to shift focus from their career to their family. Women tend to go in the direction of career because they have put their career pursuits on hold for the sake of their children.

The goals you had early in the marriage have probably changed. But your partner may have the assumption that you still want things the way they were in the beginning. Especially in the ages between 35 and 55, what's important to you and what matters most are usually being re-evaluated.
Talk with your partner about what is really important to you. What would make your life more satisfying? Listen to your spouse. Encourage them to share their views. Be open to what they say. Don't be too sensitive or defensive. Don't be judgmental. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you overreact to what they say, your spouse isn't going to talk to you.
Try to be accepting and positive of what your spouse has to say even if what you hear surprises you. If you have a hard time keeping your mouth shut, I suggest you sit on your hands. Somehow this simple behavior helps you keep quiet so that you just listen. Remember, one good idea could be life changing to your marriage.

Be curious and eager to know your spouse all over again. It doesn't take both of you to do the spring cleaning, even though it helps. You'd be surprised by what one dedicated spouse can do. And just like the spring cleaning of your home, your marriage deserves many cleanings. Keep your marriage fresh and alive. Tap into your ability to dream again. Rediscover the beauty of your husband or wife. Take one step today towards the renewing of your marriage. Then take another step tomorrow. And so on and so on..

Here are some additional "cleaning solutions" for your marriage.

1. Try to see your spouse with fresh eyes.
2. Keep your mind focused on your spouse's positive qualities.
3. Forgiveness is letting go of the past. Forgiving yourself and your spouse is an attribute of the strong.
4. If you are keeping score of your spouse's mistakes, you are setting your marriage up to fail.
5. Life is too short to allow boredom to infiltrate your marriage.
6. Good things often come from the difficult times.
7. Strive to genuinely understand your spouse.
8. Break your routines to keep the marriage exciting.
9. Maintain an attitude that encourages openness.
10. Strive to find the magic that is waiting to be discovered in your spouse.

All through the long winter, I dream of my garden. On the first day of spring, I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth. I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar.

Getting Ready For Spring - Motivation For Spring Cleaning

By Stephanie Smith

It's that time of year again when we're ready to jumpstart into spring, and that includes spring cleaning. Time to stop groaning and think about where to start. There are a lot of small things you can do that can go a long way to brightening up your home after a long winter, and hopefully these tips will help to motivate you!

Start small and go for the big wins first. You don't have to conquer the world in one day, or clean your home for that matter. Make a list of what you'd like to see done, then plan for an hour a day to work on one of the items on your list...

Wash the floor mats to get rid of the grime from winter boots and the spills they've been collecting. It doesn't take long but it makes a big difference. Check the wash water to see just how much dirt those mats have been harbouring!

Grab a pail and wash the kitchen floor and then do some spot cleaning of the walls to get rid of handprints or smudges.

Pick an evening and clean the mirrors in your home. It won't take long, but your mirrors will be shining when you're done. Don't forget to also clean the tv and computer screens.

Wash the windows in the kitchen so you can see the buds coming out on the trees when you're cooking. Then continue to the living room windows if you have the time.

Pick a closet to sort through and tidy. If you finish before you expect, you now have some bonus time!!!

Clean out the fridge and get rid of anything not quite edible, wiping down the shelves as you go. Then take pleasure in filling it with some of your favourite foods!

Want to spend some time outside enjoying the sunshine? Grab a hose and an extendable squeegee and wash the windows outside. You get clean windows and some fresh air.

Refresh your wood furniture and cupboards with some furniture polish or other wood product. You'll get rid of some dust and keep your furniture looking good.

Wash the blankets and throws on your bed and in the rest of your home. Not only will the colours be brighter, but they will smell fresher, especially if you're planning to hang them up outside to dry. Just make sure to follow the cleaning instructions on each item!

Vacuum everywhere, including under the furniture and in the corners... getting rid of the dust collecting in the carpet will not only make your home look cleaner, it will also improve your health by getting rid of dust mites.

I think you get the idea...

Everytime you finish something on your list, take pride in crossing it out. Spring cleaning doesn't have to be the dreaded chore it sounds like when it's broken out into manageable pieces. Set achievable goals and you'll be done in no time. Now for the most important part, remember to reward yourself after each milestone... grab some hot chocolate and go for a walk with your sweetie, take a long hot bath in your freshly cleaned tub, or put up your feet and watch a movie. Everything in moderation, including cleaning.

Spring Cleaning Going Green

By Becky Mundt

It's time to talk Spring cleaning. The buds are out, the birds are returning, and the days are sunny and warm. And, thanks to someone, I have no idea who, longer sooner as well!

It's that time of year when we shake off the winter blues and stretch back into the sun, rolling up our winter covers and extra clothing and digging out the shorts and tank tops. It's also time to clean all that winter gear, put it away and get the house in order.

For many of us, getting back outdoors means getting healthier right away. When the average home is between 2 and 5 times more polluted than the outdoors, it's time to get outside and reconsider how we are cleaning up inside altogether. And with all the attention and talk centered around global warming and the environment, it's the perfect time to green up our Spring cleaning regimen.

To paraphrase Dierdre Imus in the press release for her new book "Green This!", we've all grown up
associating cleaning with the smells of ammonia, chlorine bleach and other strong and potentially
toxic chemicals. So this Spring, it's time to put the green back in Spring cleaning.

It's simple to start by picking up a gallon of white vinegar, a large container of baking soda and a few bottles of hydrogen peroxide.

Replace chlorine based bleaching and cleaning products with hydrogen peroxide or, in its dry form,
sodium percarbonate. You'll find it as "Oxy Clean" or "OxoBrite" or any of quite a few brand names
for a mixture that is usually 74% sodium percarbonate and 16 percent sal soda, (also called soda ash).

It is also possible to purchase sodium percarbonate online, in convenient 2 lb tubs from thechemicalstore.com.

If you're using an automatic dishwasher, most of the commercial products contain bleach and other strong chemicals. Look for the alternatives from 7th Generation, Trader Joe's and others. Or, switch out automatic dishwasher soap for sal soda and sodium percarbonate.

The hydrogen peroxide will work wonders to kill mold and mildew, wash windows and even remove pet urine stains from carpeting and upholstery. Test for colorfastness of the material before cleaning. For most regular cleaning applications a straight 3 percent solution is perfectly sufficient.

While you might not think it's such a big deal to "go green when you clean" remember that many commercially available chemicals persist in the environment without breaking down. Even if you are not chemically sensitive to their use, they are leaving a legacy of polluted ground waters and streams and adding to the chemical soup of municipal waste treatment facilities.

For pennies you can switch from spray bottles of unpronounceable chemical compounds to either white
vinegar or hydrogen peroxide for most surface cleaning jobs. Use them in combination for a 100% bacteria free result in the kitchen or bathroom. (Don't mix them in one bottle of the h2o2 will lose it's effectiveness, instead, use a separate spray bottle for each liquid.)

In the end you'll have a cleaner, fresher and most important healthier home, inside and out.

Detoxification: Spring Cleaning For Your Body

By Brandon H. Masters

When our homes get a little messy we give them a full cleaning. When our car looks a little dirty, we take it in for a cleaning. But rarely do we give the same consideration to our bodies.

The human body needs the same style spring-cleaning regimen for digestive health. This kind of cleaning is referred to detoxification, and is a complete process of cleaning out all 7 of the areas the body eliminates waste. While you may only think of regular elimination, in the form of bowel movements there are 7 areas of elimination in the body. In addition to the colon, the body eliminates waste through the skin, lungs, kidneys, blood and lymphatic system.

There are a number of ways to give your body a good cleansing from head to toe and everywhere in between.

The largest organ on your body is your skin. When you sweat, that is your skin eliminating. Some of it is waste coming from your lymphatic system, other parts of that are waste that was stuck in the pores of your skin. Utilizing a steam bath or sauna will create more sweat than your body normally produces, essentially washing out the poisons in your lymphatic system and your skin.

There are a variety of herbs that can assist in the cleansing process. Some are used for purification to purge the organ systems. Others are revitalizing herbs that will heal and sooth the organs after a cleansing.

The most commonly discussed form of bodily elimination is through the colon. This area needs a cleansing ritual. Colon hydrotherapy is one such method. This is a process where warm water is used to gently clean the colon and encourage the muscles within the colon to work more consistently. This has been found also to be a successful natural method to cure a bout of constipation.

There are some regular daily activities you can take on that will continue the cleansing process of your body year round. One is making a change to a healthy dieting plan. A diet that is heavy in fiber (fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and beans) will assist in ongoing digestive health. The high-fiber foods help the body get rid of toxins. They attach to the fibers as they pass through and are eliminated.

Taking regular vitamin supplements can assist the body in staying healthy, and being more capable of protecting itself. Some of the vitamins with antioxidant properties, such as Vitamins A, B,C and E as well as other minerals such as zinc and selenium give the body extra power to get rid of toxins.

Deep breathing exercises can also assist in detoxification by removing poisons from the cells in the lungs.

Regular exercise is also helpful, in removing toxins from the body through sweating.

Spring Cleaning Your Dog - Tips And Suggestions To Keep Your Dog And Home Clean This Spring

By Suzi Sevcik

Soon Spring will be in the air. The snow melts, the ground thaws, tiny buds start peaking through and you know it will soon be Summer. The old saying, April Showers bring May Flowers is true, but what they don't tell you is that April Showers also brings mud. Glorious mud. If you have larger dogs that enjoy a good romp outside, odds are good you also have dogs that enjoy tracking the mud through your house. Here are some tips to help keep your dogs clean & your house too!

First, start with a good grooming. You can either take your dog into a groomer, or do the basics yourself. A good brushing removes loose hair, stimulates the skin and just feels generally good to the dog. Once you’re done brushing, trim as much hair on their paws as you can. You can either use a small scissor or clippers. The less surface area they have to track mud in, the better. Take some time to also clean their ears and trim their toenails. Once your pooch is cleaned up, grab the camera & take a few shots, if they're anything like mine, they'll only stay clean for a little while.

Once your dog is trimmed up, there are a few things you can do to keep the main areas of your house clean. When the dogs are coming in from outside you can keep a pail of water to dip their paws in & towel to wipe them dry or if you're lucky enough to have a porch or mud room just for the dogs you can keep them in that area until the mud is dry & just brush it off. This is a great opportunity to also throw in a little training if you have a multi-dog household. Since washing & drying paws can only be done one dog at a time, the other dogs can learn patience while being cleaned up.

If however you have a dog that insists on not only running through the mud, but also rolling in it, then your best bet is a garden hose. Grab your camera first & take some pictures - Usually it's pretty easy to get some shots of happy dogs. One note on rinsing your dog off, make sure you use warm water if it's still chilly outside. No one likes a cold bath and then dry them off promptly.

The warm days of Spring also give you a chance to air out any dog bedding & stuffed toys. While Rufus is outside tearing up the lawn, toss his toys & bedding in the wash & hang them on the line to air dry. He'll thank you for the fresh clean bed that night.

Springtime doesn't have to be hard on you or your house. With a few simple steps you can minimize the mud and enjoy time with your dog.
