Making 2010 a Better Year For All!
It seems that at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year we are all thinking about making some changes. At the end of January 2010, I will be retiring from my federal career that spanned more than thirty years, which included close to seven years in the US Navy and nearly 24 years as a health care administrator for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
I feel blessed that for the past 13 years I truly loved my job as the program director for the Denver Fisher House and the population I served. Many guests and volunteers said they would love to have my job. And though I have been able to do a little volunteer work of my own during the time I worked full time, went to school, and started my private massage therapy practice, I am looking forward to now being able to assist with some additional volunteer opportunities.
Perhaps you want to do something to help in your neighborhood or the greater metro area where you live. Perhaps you are unable to do something that requires a lot of time or you want to make more charitable donations.
Either way, you need to know where to start. How do you decide where to volunteer or send your donation dollars?
You can start by using Good Search, it's a search engine that gives to charitable organizations for every search that is done.
Denver, Colorado has an organization called Metro Volunteers, that will help you locate volunteer opportunities. Perhaps your neighborhood has a non-profit organization designed to improve neighbor and community relationships? The Sunnyside neighborhood has SUNI; and the Highlands neighborhood has HUNI.
How about those charitable donations you are thinking about making? Do you know if the organizations are really doing a good job with the money they receive? Wouldn't you rather know that more than 50% of the money they receive is actually being spent on their programs and not on administrative costs? You can check out these organizations at the American Philanthropy Institute website.
There may be something right around your corner of where you live or work, and in one of your areas of expertise that will satisfy your need to volunteer, as well as meet the needs of the recipient organization.
My 2010 volunteer goal is to do something in my neighborhood and help a few national and international organizations who do good and do it well.
